Long Range RFID Tagging
RFID (Radio-frequency identification) tagging is a system comprised of a radio receiver and radio transmitter for the purpose of identification and tracking using radio waves. Most commonly seen in retail stores, Short Range RFID tagging systems consist of one or more receiver aerial loops usually placed nearby the store exits and numerous passive tags attached to the stores merchandise. The short range passive tags have no intelligent circuitry and do not require any power as they are stimulated by an external source to produce signal transmission. They are commonly seen as a foil sticker or in the shape and size of a large button usually attached to merchandise such as clothing. The passive tags are removed from the merchandise at the checkout and any items which pass by the aerial receiver at the exit with a tag still attached, will sound an alarm to alert security staff. Short range tagging systems typically have a range of up to 2m. Due to their reliability and the cost benefits involved, passive tags are increasingly being used in place of barcodes for merchandise tracking and management.
Long range tagging systems typically feature a detection range of up to 40m. This longer range greatly widens the scope for many more applications of the RFID tagging system. The long range RFID system comprises of two main components, a radio receiver/reader and a radio transmitting active tag. The radio receiver is a self-contained long-range access reader device, approximately the size of a walkman type music player. This interfaces to a computer software package to provide real-time logging, alerting and reporting of all events detected, by received or absent signals from the system assigned active tags. The transmitter (active RFID tag) is a self-contained and tamper-proof device either in the same shape and size of a credit card or in the form of a bracelet which can worn on the wrist or ankle. The active RFID tags which have no moving parts, contain an aerial, inteliigent radio circuitry and a battery with a typical operational life of 3 years. The active tags emit a presence signal every 1.5 secs to indicate status of operation. This signal is processed by the receiver/reader to determine whether the tag is operational within range, the status of the battery power and whether the device has been subjected to tampering. The receivers can be cascaded to provide complete coverage of very large areas.
